Residency and Training Program

ROOTS is a new program created by Ezzat Ezzat Contemporary Dance Studio (EECDS) to link international dance artists with professional and trainee dancers in Cairo to create training opportunities, artistic exploration, performance opportunities and cross cultural exchange. 

We are seeking dance artists/ choreographers/ dancers/ teachers, to have their creative residency (between 2 to 6 weeks) within 2017/2018 at our studio in Giza, Egypt; in exchange for offering workshops, technique or creative training to the local dance artists in Egypt. We can also facilitate for the involved artists to produce and perform their work, alone or with the dancers, at EECDS (informally) or at a venue in Cairo.


Who can apply:

 Dance Artists (choreographers & dancers) from everywhere, including Egyptians and Arabs, with minimum 3 years of teaching experience.

 Minimum 3 years of artistic professional performances experience (choreographing or dancing).

 A strong will to work, adopt and develop in the Egyptian context.


EECDS Provides:

  Accommodation (single room) for the whole period of stay in the shared residency of EECDS studio.

 Studio space (3-4 hours per day, five days a week) for personal artistic exploration.

  Connection with the local dance scene artists.

  Open sharing in EECDS Space (if needed).

  Support in seeking further funding.

  English language working medium.


EECDS is not covering but can help in finding support for:

         International Travel Expenses.

         Per Diem.

         Production cost (if applicable).



         Teaching a workshop for the whole period of stay, three hours a day, 5 days a week, at EECDS or its associated spaces (details to be discussed according to the accepted proposal and needs at the time for the residency)

         A feedback report for:

o   The personal artistic experience.

o   Advantages and development suggestions for Roots project.


When to apply:

         The deadline for applying to do Roots residency within the period 1st September 2017 till 28th February 2018 is 31st July 2017.  Artists shall be notified not later than 30th August 2017.

         The second deadline for applying to do Roots residency within the period 1st March 2018 till 31st August 2018 is 31st October 2017. Artists shall be notified not later than 30th November 2017.


Selection process:

         Artists are selected to participate in the residency based on the artistic and technical quality of their applications and resumes only.

         Artists shall be replied on their proposals within one month from submitting their applications to EECDS.


Applying requirements:

         An up-to-date CV, including contact information (Name, Email, phone number, country of origin and residency, nationality).

         A proposal of maximum 3 one-side A4 pages including:

o   Short biography. (150 words max.)

o   The creative ideas you would like to explore in your residency.

o   The outcome you would like to achieve (performance with Egyptian dancers, solo, research etc.)

o   The technique or learning experience you can offer to our dance scene.

o   The reason you want to work in Egypt.

o   The preference dates for doing your residency (between September 2017 & August 2018).

         The proposal must be in one language only Arabic or English.
